Frequently Asked Questions about Cornish Milk Mineral Paint

DO I HAVE TO PREPARE MY SURFACE BEFORE PAINTING?

Sanding/Keying your surface to remove any shine from the surfaces is highly recommended before using Cornish Milk Mineral Paint, particularly when working over previous painted work.

Preparation doesn't take very long at all and will make sure you have the best professional finish. Use a lightly grained sandpaper to remove/key your shinny surface and then you can paint away.

Remember our five important P's -Prior, Preparation, Prevents, Poor, Performance.

Want to remove old paints or varnishes before painting? Then use our amazing Cornish Milk BIOSTRIP & BIOCLEAN. Both products are available in our shop and through your local Cornish Milk Stockist.

CAN I USE A PRIMER BEFORE PAINTING?

Cornish Milk Mineral Paint has a built in Primer and does not require an undercoat or primer before painting, but if you wish to prime or undercoat your surface before using our mineral paint then you can do so.

Make sure the primer/undercoat you are going to use is Low VOC and Water based, because Cornish Milk Mineral Paint's formula is a water based mineral paint and will not stick onto oiled surfaces.

''Most of the professional Artisans and Furniture Painters we know will always use a primer/undercoat first before painting, but like we said, you do not need to, as this is built into our unique mineral formula.''

CAN I USE PAINT BRUSHES, ROLLERS AND SPRAY GUNS WITH CORNISH MILK?

We recommend using a good quality synthetic paint brush or rollers to achieve the best brushstroke free finish.

You can also water down our mineral paint formula as it's 100/% water based and use a spray gun. For our spray gun recommendations, please visit our ''Top Tips'' page above in the tabs.

All brands of paint brushes and rollers can be used, there is no special paint brush required but we do highly recommend Eco Ezee paint brushes as they are 100% eco-friendly, made from sustainable and recyclable materials and will give you the best professional finish.

IS CORNISH MILK WATER BASED?

Cornish Milk mineral paint is 100% water based and contains no nasty chemicals toxins or solvents, so you can wash your paint brushes and rollers out with warm soapy water as normal.

We recommend washing your paint brushes/rollers in-between coats if you are going to leave your project for sometime, as our special eco topcoat formula within our mineral paint will start to cure and can harden your paint brush.

''Did you know that if your paint brushes do fully dry and harden, you can use our Cornish Milk's BioStrip to remove all the dried paint, without harming your paint brush. This is a great and eco effective way to save your paint brushes from being thrown away.''

COVERAGE... HOW MANY COATS WILL I NEED?

Our mineral formula has superior coverage and you can easily finish your projects with just two coats for our darker Cornish Milk colours and up to three coats for our neutral shades.

We recommend leaving an hour in-between coats to make sure your first coat of Cornish Milk Mineral Paint has fully dried throughout. Once you have finished painting your surfaces, please make sure to leave the paint to cure for up to 48 hours before heavy use.

A 500ml carton of Cornish Milk will cover 10 Square meters, which is 86 square feet and our 250ml small project cartons cover 5 square meters, which is 43 square feet.

''Trust us when we say, you are going to be shocked when you see how far our paint formula will go!''

WHAT IS CURING AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Paint curing is the process when paint has fully hardened and our special eco built in topcoat has fully preserved and set hard, for ultra protection.

Once cured your newly painted surface will become ultra-durable, water/scuff resistant and UV Protect, so our beautiful Cornish colours will never fade, even on exterior projects.

Curing times depend on your environment but we have found that Cornish Milk Mineral Paint can take up to 10 days to 28 days to fully cure and harden for heavy everyday use, but this all depends on the climate.

IS CORNISH MILK A EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR MINERAL PAINT?

Cornish Milk Mineral Paint can be used for all indoors and outdoor exterior projects. Our Mineral Paint is perfect to transform your front door, sheds and garden furniture.

Make sure that the weather is going to be fair for the first 48 hours, or that you can have your painted surface in dry conditions so our mineral formula can start to cure.

''You can use additional topcoats such as non-yellowing clear varnishes for higher traffic areas and for extra protection if desired. This is recommended if you live in harsher weather climates.''

WHAT IS THE SHELF LIFE AND HOW DO I STORE MY CARTONS AFTER USE?

Cornish Milk Mineral Paint comes in our eco cartons which have been made from recyclable materials. Our cartons are 100% leakproof once sealed and when you have finished painting, you simply clean the carton rim and tighten back together with the recyclable white clip which is supplied with each carton.

Unopened cartons of Cornish Milk have a shelf life of 6 years and once opened cartons have a shelf life of up to 4 years. You can prolong the life of opened cartons by replacing your unused paints in a new smaller airtight container.

Cornish Milk Mineral Paint cartons should be stored in a normal room temperature environment and out of direct sunlight. Our eco cartons are UV Protected but extreme heat can cause our mineral paint inside to start curing/drying within the cartons.

WHAT IS THE VOC LEVEL OF CORNISH MILK MINERAL PAINT?

Cornish Milk Mineral Paint has been tested within the EU for VOC by ISO in accordance with EU Paint Directive.

The EU limit for this type of product is Category (A) 30g per one litre. Cornish Milk Mineral Paint contains a maximum of 5g per litre, classing us as a ''Virtually no added VOC mineral paint''.

IS CORNISH MILK CHILDREN & PET SAFE?

When developing Cornish Milk Mineral Paint, we knew that our three children would want to start painting using our own paints.

When painting with your children, make sure they are watched and you work with them on creating fun projects.

If Cornish Milk Mineral Paint goes into eyes, this could cause irritation. If this accidentally happens, then please rinse your eyes with warm water and then dry. Cornish Milk will not cause harm to pets if chewed or swallowed but this depends on the quantity. Please contact your doctor or vets and take your carton with you to show them if you become worried.

CAN I USE CORNISH MILK WITH OTHER BRANDED PRODUCTS?

Cornish Milk Mineral Paint can be used with different paint brands and different decorative products.

As a new mineral paint line, we are developing new decorative tools to help you enhance your projects, but in the mean time you can use other branded waxes, metallic paints and topcoats, such as varnishes and decorative glazes.

We made sure that Cornish Milk was universal and could be used with other decorative brands that are widely available all over the world.

We are always launching New products, so sign up to our newsletter and follow us on our social media Facebook and Instagram pages for New eco products.

MY CORNISH MILK PAINT FORMULA HAS THICKEN?

Cornish Milk Mineral Paint has been made using the finest earth pigments to create our beautiful range of colours and because we have used real pigments, sometimes our mineral paint formula can thicken over time, and this is completely normal and the paint is still useable.

If you're left over paint has thicken within your carton after storing, all you need to do is add a little lukewarm water into the paint and mix, to achieve the normal Cornish Milk Mineral Paint consistency.

The water will add the moisture back into the paint and will loosen all the pigments which have absorbed some of the water within our paint formula while being stored away. Once this has been done, you can use our mineral paint as normal again.

To stop the paint formula from thickening, you can add Cornish Milk Mineral Paint into another smaller airtight container or add a little water to the formula if you are not going to be using the paint for some time and will be storing away.
